Does Magnesium Burn? What Actually Ignites — and What Never Will

Everyone in the room saw the same demonstration at fifteen: a strip of magnesium ribbon, a Bunsen flame, and a light you're told not to look at. That memory is why “it burns” follows magnesium into every design review.
The demonstration is real. The inference is wrong — and the difference is surface area.
Why the ribbon burns and the casting can't
Ignition needs the metal to reach roughly 650 °C — at its melting point — and stay there. A ribbon has almost no thermal mass: the flame's heat has nowhere to go, so the strip climbs to ignition in seconds. A casting is the opposite object. Its bulk conducts heat away faster than any credible service condition can deliver it. By the time a solid housing could ignite, it would already be a puddle — and the product containing it would have been destroyed by the fire long before the magnesium joined it.
This is why cast magnesium flies in aircraft gearboxes and sits in engine bays: at product level, there is no ignition scenario that doesn't require the product to already be gone.
Where the risk is real: the machine shop
Chips, swarf and fines are ribbons by another name — high surface area, low mass. That's where magnesium demands respect, and where a competent shop applies controls:
Cutting discipline — Sharp tools, positive feeds. Thin, hot, hair-like chips come from rubbing, not cutting — tool condition is the first control.
Coolant selection — The coolant decision is made before the first chip, with water-reactivity understood — not defaulted from the aluminium job that ran yesterday.
Chip management — Chips collected dry in covered steel containers, cleared on schedule — never allowed to accumulate wet.
The right response — Class D extinguishing agents at the machine — and everyone knows why water is not an option on a metal fire.
