Radiographic Testing (RT) is a nondestructive examination (NDE) technique that involves the use of either x-rays or gamma rays to view the internal structure of a component. In the petrochemical industry, RT is often used to inspect machinery, such as pressure vessels and valves, to detect for flaws.
Micro Structure and Grain size
In the metallographic laboratory, analyzing grains in metallic and alloy samples, such as aluminum or magnesium, is important for quality control. Most metals are crystalline in nature and contain internal boundaries, commonly known as “grain boundaries.” When a metal or alloy is processed, the atoms within each growing grain are lined up in a specific pattern, depending on the crystal structure of sample. With growth, each grain will eventually impact others and form an interface where the atomic orientations differ.

This type of test can be invaluable for design engineers to assist with material selection, wall thickness, or component geometry, including cross-holes, stress risers, etc. This test can be used to determine the pressure at which a component or assembly begins to plastically deform and its ultimate tensile strength.
